COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Length: 4 x 8-hour days or 3 x 10-hour days
Target Audience: Apprentice & Heavy Equipment Technicians

This course focuses on DC electrical concepts and how those concepts are applied to the electrical systems found on Caterpillar equipment. In class and in shop practical labs throughout the course will focus on: troubleshooting basic wiring circuits and components, testing battery condition and performance, testing and evaluating starting and charging systems, and testing basic sensor functionality.

PPE Required

Participants must provide their own safety glasses, steel toed footwear, gloves, hard hat, hearing protection, and coveralls with Hi-Visibility Markings.

PREREQUISITES

Heavy Equipment Technician (HET) Red Seal Certification + Service Information System 2.0 / Electronic Technician (ET)

COURSE OBJECTIVES

After completion of the course the participant will be able to:

  • Understand Ohm’s Law and apply to basic wiring circuits, by using a multi-meter to test shorted, open, grounded and high resistance circuits.

  • Understand proper wiring repair procedures for both harnesses and connectors (including Deutsch, Ampseal, and Sure-Seal).

  • Test batteries for current state of charge, ability to accept current while charging and ability to produce current under cranking conditions.

  • Understand charging system operation - test and evaluate the charging system for correct operation using a multi-meter and an ammeter.

  • Understand starting system operation - test and evaluate the starting system for correct operation using a multi-meter and an ammeter.

  • Understand basic sensor (input to ECM) system and function – test using a multi-meter and Cat ET.

Successful course completion - with a written examination passing grade of 80%.
