COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Length: 4 x 8-hour days or 3 x 10-hour days
Target Audience: Heavy Equipment Technicians

This course covers the Caterpillar Diesel Engine Systems and will give the Technician an understanding of how the various Intake, Exhaust, Fuel, Cooling and Lubrication Systems operate. The Technician will gain an understanding of the related components, and basic troubleshooting of the various systems.

PPE Required

Participants must provide their own safety glasses, steel toed footwear, gloves, hard hats and fire-retardant coveralls with reflective stripe.

Service Information System 2.0 / Electronic Technician (SIS2/ET)

COURSE OBJECTIVES

After completion of the course the participant will be able to:

  • Identify the five main Caterpillar Diesel Engine Fuel systems. (3400 New Scroll, MUI, MEUI, HEUI, CCR).

  • Describe the Intake Valve Actuator (IVA) and Engine Brake Operation.

  • Pressure test the Intake System.

  • Describe the different Turbocharger designs used by Caterpillar.

  • Test and adjust a Wastegated Turbocharger.

  • Describe the Exhaust system operation and basic troubleshooting tests

  • Describe Caterpillar DEA and ELC Coolants and how to test them.

  •  Describe the Cooling system operation and basic troubleshooting tests

  • Describe the Lubrication system operation and basic troubleshooting tests.

  • Describe the different engine Oil Ratings and how to determine which oil must be used for a specific diesel engine.

  • Use the various features of Electronic Technician (ET), including Data Logger, Injector Calibration and Fuel System Functional Test.

Successful completion of a written examination with a passing grade of 80%
