When you’re 12 years old, flying with your favourite football team to a CFL game is a dream come true. “I didn’t even have to go through security,” says 12-year-old Carter Milaney. A chartered flight with the BC Lions and tickets to their first pre-season game in Calgary was part of The Cat Rental Store’s sponsorship of the BC Lions training camp and as a long-time supporter of the BC Children’s Hospital, we teamed up with them to send Carter and his dad on the trip of a lifetime.
Seeing Carter, you would never know that he spent over a year and a half in hospital battling a rare form of lymphoma and had to learn to walk again. Today he’s a typical, vibrant, boy who loves football and is a linebacker for the Kelowna Lions.
“I had an amazing time,” said Carter. “I got to meet lots of the players like Mike Benson, Travis Lulay and Geroy Simon.” He spent the whole day getting to know the players, which included, sharing a pre-game meal and tossing the ball around on the sidelines. The BC Lions also presented Carter with his own personalized jersey. VP football operations, GM and head coach, Wally Buono went the extra mile to make this a really memorable day for him. “Wally Buono is very kind,” said Carter. “He made sure all the players signed my jersey.”
