COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Length: 6 x 10-hour days
Target Audience: Heavy Equipment Technician

The 797F product course discusses machine orientation, location of components, maintenance locations & procedures, systems operation, testing and adjusting. Including locating components related to the SCR system, operations and maintenance; testing and adjusting; and an overview of iron changes to C175/3500 T4 engines.

Note: This course requires access to a running 797F truck

PPE Required

Participants must provide their own safety glasses, steel-toed footwear, gloves, hard hat, hearing protection, and coveralls with Hi-Visibility Markings.

PREREQUISITES

Hydraulic Systems (S1), Diesel Engine Systems (S2), Powertrain Systems (S3), Electrical Systems (S4), and Machine Electronic Controls (MEC).

COURSE OBJECTIVES

797F Product Course Objectives:

After completion of the course, the participant will be able to:

  • Locate and identify all of the major 797F LMT components  
  • Perform diagnostics in the Engine, Transmission/Chassis ECM and Brake Electronic Control systems using the Caterpillar Monitoring System and the Electronic Technician (ET) diagnostics tool. 
  • Perform and interpret transmission/torque converter, steering, hoist, and brake performance tests. 
  • C175 ACERT Engine sensor and component locations , coolant ,oil and fuel flows 
  • SCR Component identification for Tier 4 trucks 
  • Transmission / Chassis Electronic Control System 
  • ECPC Hydraulic Transmission Control, pressure testing and diagnostics 
  • Steering System, pressure testing, operation, schematic reading 
  • Electronically Controlled Hoist System , function operation , testing 
  • VIMS 3G and Advisor basic operation and downloading  
  • Brakes, operation, air system, hydraulic system 
  • Brake Electronic Control System 
  • Auto Retarder Control (ARC) 
  • Traction Control System (TCS) 
  • Truck Production Management System (TPMS) Systems, calibration 

C175/3500 Tier 4 SCR Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and locate the major components of the emissions systems
  • Explain the functions of the various emissions systems on the Tier 4 Final product
  • Identify the functionality of diagnostic tests within Cat ET and perform them while connected to a Tier 4 Final engine during a lab exercise
  • Navigate SIS Web and demonstrate the use of selected service publications during a lab exercise
  • Trace the DEF flow throughout the SCR system
  • Troubleshoot the various emissions systems on the Tier 4 Final product during lab exercises
  • Describe the several SRC system states in ET
  • Understand the engine cylinder cutout idle management strategies
  • Describe DEF composition, safety concerns, storage requirements, and perform a DEF concentration test
  • Describe the function of the operator warning system and explain the operator inducement strategy

Successful completion of a written examination with a passing grade of 80%
