Apprenticeship

ThinkBIG Service Technician Diploma

ThinkBIG is a 20-month (80-week) heavy equipment service program created through a partnership between Northwestern Polytech, Caterpillar, and Finning. This globally recognized program that is designed to meet Alberta apprenticeship examination requirements and is only offered at one post-secondary institution in Canada. Over five 16-week blocks, you’ll learn advanced technical knowledge and develop skills through a hands-on approach, working on Cat® equipment. Each block is divided into eight weeks of class and lab time on campus and eight weeks of paid practicum at a licensed Finning location.

  • Are passionate about mechanical systems and want to learn the theoretical principles governing machine operation and design
  • Love analytical troubleshooting and problem solving
  • Want to be in an active, physical work environment
  • Enjoy the challenge of working on large, technologically advanced equipment
  • Are a Canadian citizen/permanent resident and able to work in physically demanding conditions

Apprenticeships

Finning proudly supports many apprentices: heavy equipment technicians, parts technicians, electricians, welders, millwrights and machinists in Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories.

Finning's Apprenticeship Team is responsible for all administration functions to assist the apprentice with their apprenticeship from start to finish. This includes but not limited to:

  • Apprentice contract set-up
  • Pay increase completion
  • Technical training registration
  • Work experience updates
  • Journeyperson certification completion
