Finning volunteers make a difference at the Saskatoon Tribal Council’s Backpack Giveaway

Finning was excited to partner with the Saskatoon Tribal Council’s White Buffalo Youth Lodge (WBYL) again this year for its annual Backpack Giveaway event on August 23, 2024, marking another successful year of community support and engagement. This year, an impressive 3,500 backpacks were filled and distributed to students preparing for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. To put this achievement into perspective, at the inaugural event in 2014 only 100 backpacks were given away.

Finning has proudly sponsored and participated in this event for the past seven years. This year, six Finning employees volunteered to hand out 20,000 duotangs during the seven-hour event. Each backpack, valued at approximately $300, included essential school supplies such as duotangs, pens, pencils, and binders. This significant contribution provides substantial savings for thousands of families, many of whom have multiple children enrolled in school.

The need in the community is great and Finning really stepped up to the table and helped contribute to the event's success which doesn’t surprise me,” Finning’s Indigenous Business Development Manager, Harold Reimer shared. The team in Saskatchewan has been supporting this event for many years now and our support and involvement really has a positive impact on the families who live, work, and play in the central Saskatchewan region.

In addition to providing backpacks filled with school supplies, the WBYL event also included a community barbecue, haircuts, kids' games, and more, all free of charge. This event is a testament to the power of community collaboration and the positive impact it has on local families.
