J Murphy & Sons, one of the most recognised names in the building and civil engineering industry, has taken delivery of eight new Cat® 314E LCR hydraulic excavators from Finning, becoming the first business in the UK to invest in the new model. The company has also purchased five Cat 320E LRR hydraulic excavators, bringing its total fleet of Cat machines to twenty-five.

Working in a number of space-restricted job-sites, including railway sidings and motorways, J Murphy & Sons required machinery with zero-tail swing. Built to meet European Union stage IIIB emission standards, the Cat 314E LCR and Cat 320E LRR gives the company a powerful, versatile and fuel-efficient machine with compact dimensions to work productively within confined areas.

John Coll, Division Director of Plant, Transport and Procurement at J Murphy & Sons, said: “As a business, we operate in a multitude of different applications that can prove to be challenging when matching plant equipment. We consulted a number of suppliers and manufacturers outlining our requirements, and ideally, we were looking to form a partnership with a supplier. We found Finning encompassed everything we were looking for in terms of equipment, back-up support and cost.”

“A large percentage of our work requires machinery to operate in areas where space is minimal. The Cat 314E LCRs and Cat 320E LRRs have reduced-radius designs that keep the upper-structure within the machines’ footprint, which reduces the risk of damaging the machine or surrounding obstacles.

“We pride ourselves in being a forward-thinking and innovative business and being the first company in the UK to have the Cat 314E LCRs puts us ahead of the game. Operating the new machines and working alongside Finning will allow us to work quicker and more economically, whilst reducing our emission levels and fuel costs.”

As part of the deal, each machine will benefit from a two-year preventative warranty and the back-up support of the nationwide network of Finning branches and on-call engineers. The machinery meets J Murphy & Sons ‘zero accident’ policy, with both companies achieving RoSPA Gold Awards.

Matt Revell, Finning Key Account Manager, said: “J Murphy & Sons’ reputation for investing in modern machines is well known across the industry. Finning’s reputation of providing total equipment solutions is equally well known. This investment in a new model to the UK market will see meaningful benefits to its productivity and operating costs.

“Performance and versatility is an important attribute that J Murphy & Sons look for in new equipment, so we foresee the new equipment being integral to delivering its projects on time and budget. For Finning, it shows that our commitment to our customers is the key to identifying the correct equipment solution.
